The Rugby Vegan Bookgroup
As well as sharing a love of cakes many Rugby Vegans love books and reading. The bookgroup grew out of all the book discussions and book swapping that had been going on. We meet bi-monthly at Ryton Organic Gardens.
The next bookgroup book is Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It has won many awards and is promoted as a 'crossover' book, for adults and for children.
Email Jen if you want to borrow a copy of the book. Come and join us at Ryton Organic Gardens at 11am on Saturday 25th September.

The Life of Pi
We had a great Saturday morning meeting discussing The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. The novel tells the stories of Piscine (known as Pi) from a colourful upbringing in a zoo in India, through his (almost simultaneous) conversions to Islam and Christianity to his family's immigration to Canada. Unfortunately for Pi their ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific and he ends up on a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, a monkey and Richard Parker, a huge Bengal tiger. All members of the group enjoyed the book although Jan felt that the denouement was patronising, unnecessary and detracted from the impact of the story. We spent some time talking about Pi's ethical dilemmas about food - a lifelong vegetarian he was forced to catch and eat fish and turtles or starve to death. How would we cope in a similar situation? Some members of the group maintained that they would not eat flesh foods in any circumstances although others took a more pragmatic view. However there was no danger of any of us going hungry at Ryton!
