01/08/2004: The Rugby Vegan goes live!
The Rugby Vegan website is now up and running! Browse it at your leisure... It has been designed by Jon Brook and Jen Dunn. Email Jon with any compliments or Jen with any complaints!

Andrea's Introduction:

Hello everyone,

This wonderful weather is a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and top up your Vitamin D levels. This quarter's Rugby Vegan partly focuses on the environment and how, as ethically aware people, we can reduce our impact on the earth. I am a great believer in that everyone can make a difference and if we all did something the world would be a better place. Is there anything you can do to improve the environment we live in?

“If one in four people commuted just 5 miles a week on a bicycle, the air would be spared of 6.7 million tons of carbon dioxide.” Environmental E-News

Now that the weather is nice why not try cycling or walking when making local trips? It’s good for your health, great for the environment and much more fun than sitting in a traffic jam!

It is great that we now have a vegan bookgroup. Discussing books with like-minded individuals over a cup of hot chocolate is very pleasurable. Why not join our bookgroup and share in our passion? You might love books as much as we do or we might help you rediscover the joy of reading. Check out the bookgroup page for more information about what we've been reading!

As normal we will be meeting at Summersault during the summer and it would be lovely to see any of you if you’ve time for a chat. See events diary for dates.

Hope you all have a wonderful summer and manage to find great food on your travels. Let me know of your successes and disasters and we can share them on the website or in the next newsletter. If you are looking for places to visit this summer you could look at the vegan travel section of the website for some ideas.

Best Wishes,
Andrea Elson

What's New?

The whole website is new! It is made up from articles that have appeared in The Rugby Vegan Newsletter that has been published and distributed by Andrea Elson since Spring 2002. Great ideas like hers tend to grow and we hope that this website will be able to reach more people and give more information than a quarterly printed newsletter can. It may also save a few trees! You can access all the articles by going to our archive page. As this is a new venture there may be some teething problems, spelling mistaikes (ask Jen!) or bizarre errors (ask Jon!), report them to us [here]. If there is anything you would like to add to the website then get in touch.

Peter & Vi Cheshire have recently been to Norfolk and have some suggestions of things to see and (more importantly!) places to eat there. Peter has also contributed some great ideas for Vegan barbeques - hope the weather stays nice long enough for you to enjoy them! Julie-Anne Simms has also been doing some travelling and reports back about a lovely cafe in Dumfriesshire called The Green Tea House.

Barbara Flagg contines the theme of summer eating with recpies for Vegan Salad Cream, and Lemon Cake. For those rainy summer days when you need a bit of warming up try her spicy Thai Curry.

Several recent articles look at making a difference to the environment. Andrea introduces the Movement For Compassionate Living and also writes about Traffic Congestion whilst Adrian contemplates the everyday contempt for animals that is pervasive in our society in his regular column, Vegan Mail. Carol Price discusses the uses (and abuses) of the term "vegetarian" and tackles "the McDonalds issue" in The Great Debate.

Enjoy the website and have a great summer!

Best,
Jen and Jon
